Galicia faces major labor shift as 131,700 workers approach retirement
Galicia faces a significant labor challenge as approximately 131,700 workers over the age of 60 approach retirement. According to the State Public Employment Service (Sepe), this generational turnover is expected to account for roughly 80% of new job openings over the next decade, with only 20% resulting from direct economic growth.
The demographic aging in Galicia is more pronounced than the national average in Spain. Currently, 11.7% of Social Security affiliates in the region are over 60, compared to approximately 10.4% nationwide. This trend creates a structural challenge for the labor market, necessitating proactive strategies in training, qualification, and talent attraction to fill critical vacancies.
