Galicia forest workers demand better provisions amid invasive species concerns

Forest firefighters and related personnel in Galicia have submitted nearly 750 signatures to the Xunta de Galicia's General Directorate of Mountain Defense. The workers are demanding improved food provisions and the payment of a daily meal allowance, similar to what other service agents receive. They described the current situation as “degrading and unjust,” citing poor food quality and the rising cost of living as factors impacting their purchasing power.

In the Nigrán municipality, specifically in the Chandebrito area, local authorities are facing challenges with the “unstoppable” regrowth of invasive eucalyptus and acacia species. This follows the memory of the tragic 2017 wildfires. While the creation of the Os Matos-Río Táboas forest park has helped mitigate risks, officials note that managing invasive species remains a difficult and continuous task. The local council is also working toward establishing a permanent municipal forest brigade to improve regional preparedness.
