Galicia gains first Starlight Starlight Park amid solar eclipse tourism surge

The Mirador de Montouto in A Caniza has been officially recognized as Galicia’s first ‘Starlight Starlight Park’ by the Starlight Foundation. This accreditation places the site within an international network of 23 certified locations dedicated to astronomical observation and the prevention of light pollution.

In conjunction with this designation, the upcoming solar eclipse is expected to drive significant tourism in Galicia. The Xunta de Galicia predicts that visitors traveling specifically for the eclipse could account for more than 30% of the region's total tourist volume for August. Areas such as Trevinca and Valdeorras are identified as primary hubs for astronomical interest due to their geography.

To manage the anticipated influx of visitors, regional authorities are working with the central government to reinforce bus communications and mitigate traffic issues. Local municipalities are also organizing activities, including guided walks and educational sessions, to promote astrotourism and the protection of the night sky.
