Galicia health agency issues urgent call for blood donations

The Axencia de Doazón de Órganos e Sangue (ADOS) has issued an urgent appeal to the citizens of Galicia to increase blood donations. Current reserves for blood groups A positive, A negative, O positive, and O negative are reported to be at low levels.

Galician hospitals require more than 400 donations daily to maintain essential services, including surgical interventions, oncological treatments, transplants, and emergency care. While donation rates often fluctuate during vacation periods, the medical demand for blood components remains constant.

To facilitate donations, ADOS mobile units will travel through various municipalities across the four provinces from Wednesday, August 19, to Saturday, August 22. Locations include cities such as Vigo, Santiago, A Coruña, Lugo, and Pontevedra, among others. Eligible donors must be adults weighing over 50 kilograms and free of blood-transmissible diseases.
