Galicia implements GPS fencing and drone seeding to manage wildfire risks

In Galicia, Spain, new technological initiatives are being deployed to manage land and prevent the impact of wildfires. One pilot project utilizes GPS-based virtual fencing for livestock. By using tracking collars, managers can establish digital boundaries for grazing animals without physical fences. This system uses acoustic signals to guide animals back to authorized areas, allowing for more flexible and efficient grazing that helps reduce vegetation buildup and fuel continuity.

Additionally, the CoberDron project is utilizing drones to combat soil erosion in areas devastated by previous mega-fires. In Vilamartín de Valdeorras, over 120 million triticale seeds—a hybrid of wheat and rye—were distributed via drone over 90 hectares of burned terrain. This method targets steep slopes where traditional planting is difficult. The goal is to establish a quick herbaceous cover to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion during the vulnerable period following a fire.
