Galicia labor mobility report shows high reliance on private vehicles

Data from the Galician Institute of Statistics (IGE) reveals that private vehicles remain the primary mode of transport for workers in Galicia. Approximately 69.5% of employees use only private cars or motorcycles to commute, while only 7.1% rely solely on public transportation. The most common reasons cited for choosing private vehicles include a lack of public transport frequency (65%) and the perceived comfort of private transport (62.8%).

In Pontevedra, despite urban planning designed to favor pedestrians and cyclists, 66% of workers use private vehicles. Only 8.5% of the workforce in the city utilizes public transport. This trend is higher in Ferrol, where private vehicle use reaches 67%. Conversely, A Coruña shows the highest reliance on public transit among major cities at 22.8%.

Commuting distances remain relatively short, with 74.7% of workers traveling less than 15 kilometers. Additionally, 53% of workers reach their destinations in under 15 minutes. In contrast to the working population, students show different habits; 65% of students travel to their educational centers via walking, cycling, or public transport.
