Galicia livestock market volume drops over 25% as prices fall

On 28 July the Central Agropecuaria de Galicia auction in Silleda recorded 1,197 cattle entries, 142 fewer than the previous session, and sold 1,138 animals for a total turnover of €977,174. This represents a decline of €332,531, a drop of more than 25 % and brings the market’s total business below the €1 million mark.

The average price fell to €459.12 per head, €56.73 lower than before. Re‑aring (recría) remained the largest segment with 719 calves generating €312,202 in revenue, while the dairy (vacún mayor) and beef (carne) categories also saw notable price reductions across age groups. In a separate session on 11 August, the auction of re‑aring calves was suspended, although sales of pasture‑raised, fattening and dairy cows continued.

These movements reflect a broader depreciation of livestock prices in Galicia, with price drops ranging from €5 to €120 per animal depending on breed and age group, and a general slowdown in market activity.
