Galicia political groups denounce delays in forest fire prevention clearing

Political groups in Galicia are denouncing significant delays in land clearing and forest fire prevention measures. In Lugo, the PSOE (Socialist Party) reported that approximately 60% of planned rural clearing remains unfinished, with 420 of the 770 intended kilometers still pending. Local councilor Ana González Abelleira warned that the delay compromises road safety and fire prevention, noting that a change in local government allegedly interrupted a previously established June start date.

Simultaneously, the BNG (Galician Nationalist Bloc) has criticized the Xunta de Galicia's Rural Affairs Department for failing to clean secondary strips in high-risk fire zones. The BNG highlighted that despite a commitment by the regional government to complete cleaning in municipalities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants by May 31, many areas remain untouched. The opposition claims the lack of transparency regarding executed work and the delay in mobilizing brigades pose a direct threat to residents living in urban-forest interfaces.
