Galicia preserves culinary traditions through historic markets and octopus recipes

Galicia maintains deep culinary and cultural traditions centered around octopus. In the town of Meira, a traditional market has been held biweekly for over three centuries, tracing its origins back to a royal privilege granted in 1707 by King Philip III. The market, which has roots in monastic organization dating to 1258, remains a significant local gathering point where traditional methods like cooking octopus in large cauldrons are still practiced.

Beyond historical markets, octopus offers significant culinary versatility. Popular preparations include the Galician classic 'pulpo á feira', grilled octopus with roasted potatoes, Italian-style octopus and potato salad, and octopus added to Russian salad. International variations, such as the Japanese 'takoyaki' octopus balls, also highlight the ingredient's global appeal.
