Galicia pushes experimental zones to lead Spain's offshore wind development

The regional government of Galicia is aiming to secure a position in Spain’s first offshore wind auction by promoting experimental marine zones. At a workshop in Ferrol, Energy Planning Director Pablo Fernández Vila highlighted the importance of the Punta Langosteira test area and the Innomar project, which seeks to install Spain’s first floating prototype to capture wave and current energy. The project includes a multiconnection system that would transmit generated power to shore via a single line, reducing environmental impact and enabling nearby autoconsumption.

Fernández Vila said Galicia wants to “not miss the opportunity to position itself at the forefront of this technology and turn the sector into an industry that attracts wealth and creates new jobs.” The initiative aligns with the region’s Climate Change and Energy Strategy 2050 and the Energy Agenda 2030, positioning Galicia as a leading European hub for marine renewables while awaiting the national auction call.
