Galicia ranks third in Spain's blood donation rate in 2025

In 2025 Galicia became the third‑highest autonomous community in Spain for blood donations, recording 39 donations per 1,000 residents. Only Extremadura (47/1,000) and Castile‑León (45/1,000) posted higher rates, putting Galicia five points above the national average of 34 per 1,000.

The Ministry of Health released the figures during World Blood Donor Day, noting that 105,337 of Spain’s 1,662,035 total donations came from Galicia. The region’s donation effort was coordinated by the Agency for Organ and Blood Donation (ADOS), which also launched a summer campaign titled “A Breath of Life” aiming for 22,000 donations by the end of August. Mobile units will visit more than 170 municipalities, and seven permanent donation centres remain open in major cities. In 2025, 5,505 apheresis procedures were performed, including plasma‑pheresis that produced 635 liters of plasma for medical use.
