Galicia ranks third in Spanish municipal accountability
Galicia remains among the Spanish autonomous communities with the highest rates of local entity accountability, according to a report from the Consello de Contas. The region holds the third position nationally for timely reporting, trailing only Aragon and the Valencian Community.
Despite this ranking, municipal transparency regarding deadlines has seen a slight decline. The percentage of local entities submitting accounts on time fell from 73% to 72.08%. A total of 233 out of 313 municipalities met the October deadline, while 80 municipalities failed to submit their 2025 figures on time, an increase from 77 the previous year.
Major cities continue to struggle with compliance. The cities of A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Santiago failed to meet the deadline. By province, A Coruña recorded the highest number of pending municipalities with 29, followed by Ourense with 18, Lugo with 17, and Pontevedra with 16. While municipal deadlines were missed, the four provincial councils (diputaciones) and several mancomunidades also reported varying levels of compliance.
