Galicia requests EU fishing quota stability and legal certainty for 2027

The Galician Department of the Sea (Consellería do Mar) has submitted formal contributions to the European Commission regarding the 'Sustainable Fisheries in the EU: current situation and orientations for 2027' public consultation. The regional government is calling for sustainability efforts from the fishing fleet to be met with quota stability and legal certainty for 2027.

Galicia advocates for a management model where biological resource management and socioeconomic profitability advance together to ensure EU food sovereignty. Key proposals include recognizing the Bay of Biscay and Iberian waters as strategic assets and implementing multi-year recovery paths to prevent drastic annual fluctuations in quotas. The department argues that automatic quota cuts should be avoided when stock recovery is hindered by environmental factors or illegal activity by third-party operators.

Additionally, the department highlighted the impact of the energy crisis on competitiveness. It is requesting a strategy involving specific modernization funds and price coverage mechanisms that go beyond one-off compensations from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund.
