Galicia requests specific EU funding for drought and wildfires
Alfonso Rueda, president of the Xunta de Galicia, has called on the European Union in Brussels for specific funding to combat drought and forest fires in Galicia. Speaking during events at the European Committee of the Regions, Rueda emphasized that climate change policies must move beyond generic statements and provide concrete resources to address the seasonal wildfires that destroy thousands of hectares in the region annually.
Rueda also urged the European Commission to act as a facilitator for European networks, allowing peripheral regions to participate in defense value chains, provided that military spending does not displace other regional priorities. Additionally, the Galician leader criticized the Spanish central government for delays in establishing a position for negotiating the new European financial framework, noting a lack of communication with autonomous communities.
