Galicia storm ignites transformer blaze and forest fire in Ferrolterra
A powerful summer storm struck Galicia on 11 July, bringing intense lightning that set fire to a transformer at Limodre on the border of Fene and Ares. The blaze spread to a nearby hill before firefighters from the Supramunicipal Emergency Group contained it by 23:00. At the same time, a second lightning strike sparked a forest fire in the Covas parish of Ferrol, which was also quickly brought under control by the regional forest district.
Ahead of the storm, A Coruña prepared for its first summer tempest after twelve dry days, with AEMET issuing orange warnings for rain and electrical activity. Forecasts called for gusts up to 90 km/h, possible hail and temperatures reaching 27 °C before the storm, which could become the strongest in recent years.
