Galicia Sur Health Research Institute reports record growth in 2025

The Galicia Sur Health Research Institute (IISGS), covering the Vigo and Pontevedra-O Salnés health areas, has released its 2025 Annual Scientific Report, documenting significant growth in research activity and international impact.

Key metrics from 2025 include 479 indexed publications and a substantial increase in scientific quality. The Crown Index, an international impact indicator, rose from 1.77 in 2022 to 4.71 in 2025. Highly cited articles doubled from 84 to 163. Furthermore, publications in top-tier journals saw historic gains, with first-quartile (Q1) articles increasing by 65.2% to 266, and first-decile (D1) articles growing by 140.7% to 130.

Financially, the institute reached a record 8.8 million euros in funding, supporting 163 active research projects, 504 clinical studies, and 35 doctoral theses. Scientific Director Eva Poveda noted that these achievements provide necessary momentum for the upcoming Carlos III Health Institute reaccreditation phase. The institute also implemented a generational renewal plan to attract external talent and is currently evaluating the Social Return on Investment (SROI), noting that every euro invested in Galicia Sur generated 10 euros in social impact.
