Galicia tourism officials emphasize sustainable development and diversification

Tourism officials in Galicia are focusing on diversifying regional offerings to promote sustainable growth and combat seasonality. Xosé Merelles, the Director of Tourism for Galicia, recently participated in the V NOVE cultural itinerary, highlighting the natural and productive resources of Valdeorras. The region has seen a 43 percent increase in visitors, supported by initiatives such as the promotion of honey heritage in the Serra da Enciña da Lastra Natural Park and the development of wine tourism and the Camiño de Invierno.

In the Salnés region, José Ramón García Guinarte, manager of the Mancomunidade do Salnés, emphasized the need to prioritize quality over quantity. To encourage year-round tourism beyond traditional sun and beach models, the region is promoting gastronomy, nature, and heritage through initiatives like ‘Salnés Slow Business,’ pet-friendly tourism, and the Ruta del Padre Sarmiento. Efforts are also being made to expand into international markets, including China.
