Galicia traffic authorities launch tire and light safety campaign
The Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) and the Civil Guard have launched a special surveillance campaign on Galician roads. Running from Monday through Thursday, the initiative focuses on the maintenance and condition of vehicle tires and lighting systems.
The campaign coincides with the transition to winter time, a period characterized by reduced daylight hours and potentially adverse weather conditions. Authorities are emphasizing the importance of functional headlights for visibility and proper tire tread depth to ensure road adhesion. While the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm, the DGT recommends a minimum of 3 mm for safety.
Data from the DGT indicates that approximately 5% of vehicles, or over one million, circulate with serious tire defects, including irregular wear and incorrect pressure. Additionally, officials noted that the risk of serious injury or death doubles in vehicles aged 10 to 15 years compared to those less than five years old, highlighting the necessity of rigorous safety maintenance.
