Galicia unveils biotech strategy to create 7,000 jobs by 2030

The Xunta of Galicia, led by President Alfonso Rueda, presented the 2026‑2030 Biotechnology Strategy with an €805 million budget. The plan targets a 20% increase in sector employment, aiming for 7,000 jobs by 2030, and a 15% rise in researchers to reach 1,600. It also seeks to expand the number of biotech firms from 162 to 200, boost annual turnover by 30%, double private investment and strengthen international market links.

Key measures include direct grants for R&D&I projects, a business accelerator and the creation of the Biopolo da Sionlla hub in Santiago to attract new infrastructure and companies. The current sector comprises 162 companies (over 60 fully biotech), around 5,600 workers and €2 billion in annual revenue, developing projects for agri‑food safety, marine environmental protection and sustainable pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Rueda described the initiative as a step toward making Galicia a "biorregion of reference" in Europe through public‑private collaboration.
