Spain extends agricultural diesel aid and seeks fishing deal renewal
The Spanish government is implementing several measures to support the agro-food sector amid geopolitical instability and rising energy costs. Minister of Agriculture Luis Planas has announced the likely extension of subsidies for agricultural diesel until the end of 2026 to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict, which has driven fuel prices up significantly. This follows meetings with various professional organizations to address concerns regarding inflation and production costs.
In addition to fuel aid, the government is coordinating with autonomous communities to prepare for the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the 2028-2034 period, which is expected to have a budget of 37.235 billion euros. Officials are emphasizing the need for national unity to strengthen Spain's position within the European Union.
Simultaneously, regional authorities in Galicia are urging the central government to use diplomatic pressure in Brussels to renew the EU-Mauritania fishing agreement. The current protocol expires on November 14, and failure to reach a new deal could lead to a temporary cessation of activities for the Galician fleet and allow competitors like Russia, China, or Turkey to expand their presence in the strategic waters.
