Galician archaeological and marine conservation efforts underway

Archaeological and environmental efforts are underway in the Galicia region of Spain to preserve historical and ecological sites. In Ons, a new four-week archaeological campaign has begun at Castelo dos Mouros. Researchers from the University of Vigo's Group of Studies in Archaeology, Antiquity and Territory (GEAAT) are investigating the site to better understand the transition between Iron Age Castreño occupation and Roman settlement. Previous findings suggest the area was inhabited for nine centuries, with Roman settlements primarily occupying lower areas near Canexol beach.

Simultaneously, a consensus is forming to protect the Estelas Islands marine sanctuary in the Ría de Vigo. Experts, including researchers from the University of Vigo and local fishing leaders, are opposing a proposal to extract iron from the shipwreck of the “Ivy,” which sank 50 years ago. The wreck has evolved into a consolidated natural reef that supports protected seaweed and various marine species. The Spanish Ministry of Defense has paused extraction operations to evaluate the environmental impact on this area, which is part of the Natura 2000 network and located near the Atlantic Islands National Park.
