Galician basketball clubs expand youth programs and female participation

Basketball clubs in Galicia are expanding their youth programs, with a specific focus on developing female talent.

Costa Ártabra, based in Ferrol, is actively seeking new female players born in 2017 and 2018 to bolster its girls' academy. The club aims to address a current shortage of players in these age groups to ensure long-term structural growth and a pipeline for higher categories. Minibasket coordinator Ariana Charlón noted that while the club is a reference for men's basketball, encouraging younger girls to try the sport remains a primary challenge.

Meanwhile, Atlético Novás has announced the creation of its first-ever female youth team, competing in the infantil category for the 2026/27 season. Club president Andrés Senra described the initiative as a long-standing goal to make the entity more representative. The club's youth development efforts have also seen success in male categories, with several players recently entering pre-selection phases for the Galician regional team.
