Galician Coast Guard seizes illegal octopus and crab in Rías Baixas
Galician Coast Guard units have conducted significant operations to combat illegal fishing in the Rías Baixas, specifically targeting the poaching of octopus and velvet crab. In a single day of surveillance and inspections across the Vigo, Arousa, and Muros-Noia estuaries, authorities intercepted 511 illegal fishing implements.
The operations resulted in the seizure of over 143 kilograms of octopus and 11 kilograms of velvet crab. These species are currently of high commercial interest and are frequently targeted by poachers in areas where harvesting is restricted to allow for resource recovery. The Coast Guard continues to conduct land, sea, and air patrols to prevent the illegal sale of these resources on the black market.
