Galician Composer León Durán Wins DISA‑JOCAN Orchestration Contest as Galicia Piano Competition Marks 10th Anniversary

León Durán, a 24‑year‑old Galician musician, was selected as the winner of the DISA‑JOCAN Orchestration Competition. His symphonic arrangements of Saint‑Saëns’ Canary‑inspired works will be performed by the Joven Orquesta de Canarias (JOCAN) on its September tour of the Canary Islands, Barcelona and Madrid, accompanied by Los Sabandeños and pianist Juan Floristán. The prize includes a €5,000 award and aims to promote emerging talent under the age of thirty.

In parallel, the International Piano Competition in Vigo celebrates its tenth anniversary. For the first time, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia will accompany the finals on 14 August at the Auditorio Mar de Vigo. The event features noted artists such as pianist Martha Argerich and actor Jeremy Irons, and attracted almost 400 participants from 77 countries. A junior segment was introduced to support young pianists, and the competition continues to seek greater resources and prize enhancements.
