Galician engineer joins EU wildfire emergency response team
Raquel Carreira, a forest technical engineer from Galicia's Consellería do Medio Rural, served as a specialist within the European Union's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC). As part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Carreira was involved in managing the emergency response for wildfires in Madrid and Castilla y León during July.
In addition to the Spanish emergencies, she performed potentiality analyses for fires occurring in other countries, including France, Greece, and Portugal. The ERCC functions as a central hub for monitoring global events and ensuring the rapid deployment of emergency support, such as specialized equipment and expertise, following major disasters exacerbated by climate change, including droughts and forest fires.
