Galician forest firefighters launch hunger strike over labor stability
Five forest firefighters in Galicia have initiated a 24-hour hunger strike in Chandebrito to protest labor instability and inadequate working conditions. The protesters are demanding year-round employment to replace their current nine-month fixed-discontinuous contracts, which they argue do not compensate for the high risks faced during wildfire suppression.
Participants expressed frustration with the regional government, the Xunta, and criticized the perceived lack of action from unions. The choice of Chandebrito for the protest is symbolic, as the area was severely impacted by devastating wildfires in 2017. Beyond job security, the firefighters have also campaigned for better provisions while on the front lines.
Separately, the Economic and Social Council (CES) of Galicia announced it is preparing reports for 2027 that will address forest fires and rural employment challenges.
