Galician groups form coalition against regional interest projects
Various local platforms in Galicia have united to form the ‘Coordinadora Galega para a Defensa do Modelo Territorial de Galicia’. This new organization aims to coordinate a response against the Proyectos de Interés Autonómico (PIA), which are regional interest projects involving residential and business developments.
Representatives stated that their opposition is not directed against the construction of housing itself, but rather against the specific model being implemented. They argue that development should not come at the expense of local heritage, existing properties, or the community's connection to the land.
Preliminary estimates from the coordinator suggest that the residential PIAs could involve the expropriation of approximately 2.45 million square meters across thirteen municipalities. The group currently represents over 1,000 affected families and roughly 2,000 property owners, though these figures are provisional due to complex inheritance and shared property situations.
