Galician municipalities implement new waste management and recycling initiatives

Municipalities in Galicia are implementing new waste management strategies to improve recycling rates and reduce costs.

In Redondela, the local government has launched a mobile recycling station designed for high-traffic events, such as local festivals and sporting competitions. This mobile unit features separate collectors for paper and cardboard, glass, light packaging and plastics, and residual waste. The initiative aims to prevent the massive accumulation of mixed waste during public celebrations, which currently incurs high disposal costs.

In Nigrán, the local council and waste management company Prezero have begun distributing 250 specialized containers for organic matter and glass to schools and businesses. This rollout is part of a new ten-year, 29.7 million euro waste collection contract. The agreement includes a 3.4 million euro initial investment to increase the number of containers by 20%, renew existing equipment, and introduce a new fleet of vehicles. The service will include daily organic waste collection for participating businesses and scheduled glass collection.
