Galician Parliament calls for increased support for fishing sector

The Galician Parliament has approved two initiatives presented by the People's Party (PP) requesting the central government to provide more substantial support and protection for the maritime-fishing sector. The proposals specifically focus on the needs of shellfish gatherers and the 63 fishing guilds (cofradías) in Galicia, which represent 28% of all such organizations in Spain.

One initiative, defended by Deputy Nazareth Cendán, seeks a 100% exemption from Social Security monthly fees for shellfish gatherers who were forced to suspend activities due to external factors but were still required to make full payments.

A second initiative, defended by Dolores Hermelo, calls for specific aid for fishing guilds following the impact of personnel shortages in Maritime Captaincies and the implementation of new maritime navigation regulations.
