Galician political parties reach pact on language use in schools

The Popular Party (PP), the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), and Democracia Ourensana (DO) have reached an agreement to modify the plurilingualism decree in Galicia. This pact aims to adjust how official languages are distributed in schools, specifically lifting a restriction that previously prevented science subjects from being taught in Galician.

Under the new agreement, schools will have the flexibility to decide which language to use for different subject blocks, such as swapping the languages used for Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics. However, a condition remains that the total percentage of subjects taught in Galician cannot exceed 50%. This means if a center chooses to teach sciences in Galician, it may need to teach social sciences in Spanish to maintain linguistic balance.

While the Real Academia Galega and the Consello da Cultura Galega welcomed the increased flexibility, they have called for deeper reflection from the PP and PSOE, noting that the agreement may not fully align with the region's sociolinguistic reality. Meanwhile, nationalist groups have expressed dissatisfaction, advocating for a mandate where 100% of subjects are taught in Galician.
