Galicia's Bioluminescent “Mar de Ardora” Lights Up A Lanzada Beach

A spectacular bioluminescent event, known locally as the mar de ardora, illuminated the waters off A Lanzada in the Rías Baixas of Galicia on the night of 15 July 2026. Millions of dinoflagellates, chiefly Noctiluca scintillans, emitted a vivid blue‑green glow whenever the sea was disturbed, attracting hundreds of residents and tourists who gathered to photograph the natural light show.

The same micro‑algal bloom also produced reddish‑orange discolorations, commonly called red tides, around nearby Ons Island and other coastal points. Authorities confirmed the phenomenon is harmless and unrelated to pollution, noting that similar blooms have been recorded earlier in the season in the Rías de Arousa and Vigo. The events are being promoted as a seasonal attraction for nature‑based tourism in Galicia.
