Galicia's provincial deputations approve aid for women shellfish workers and fund gender‑equality projects

The provincial deputation of A Coruña adopted a unanimous motion demanding stronger support for more than 6,000 women employed in the marisqueering sector. Deputies highlighted that the current regional aid of €700 per month leaves many workers below the minimum wage after social‑security deductions. They called for immediate payment of full wages, exemption from contributions during forced inactivity, and a comprehensive scientific study of the banks of mussels and clams to address high mortality linked to freshwater discharges. The motion also seeks stricter regulation of reservoir releases and increased sanitation investment in coastal municipalities, while the deputation pledged to accelerate its own assistance programmes for cooperatives and environmental recovery.

Separately, the diputación of Pontevedra approved more than €100,000 from a €260,000 equality fund to support gender‑equality initiatives and anti‑gender‑violence programmes in twenty municipalities across the Vigo, Baixo Miño, O Condado and A Paradanta areas. Grants range from €5,200 to €6,000 per town and will finance municipal equality plans, training for women, sexual‑education projects, family‑conciliation measures and audits of municipal pay structures, aiming to combat gender‑based violence and promote equal opportunities at the local level.
