Galicia's Xunta approves €216 million food sector plan for 2026‑2028
The regional government of Galicia (Xunta de Galicia) has approved a strategic plan for the food sector covering 2026‑2028, allocating an initial budget of €216 million. The plan targets economic, social and environmental transformation of the industry and aims to position Galicia as a leader in quality and innovation on the international market.
Key actions include financial aid for small and medium‑sized enterprises involved in seafood processing and agricultural product commercialization, a regional waste‑management programme for food residues, collaborative R&D projects in biotechnology, the organization of the 2026‑2027 Feiras contests to promote Galician fish, shellfish and aquaculture products, and the creation of the BBFood accelerator to foster entrepreneurship. A continuous monitoring and impact‑analysis system will be set up to allow future updates of the plan. The food sector joins eight other strategic sectors previously declared by the Galician government, such as automotive, shipbuilding and ICT.
The plan was drafted with input from industry firms, service providers, research entities, trade unions, cooperatives, industrial clusters and public administrations, reflecting a broad consensus on the sector’s development path.
