Galileo's telescope and Soviet Afghanistan invasion among key August 8 milestones

On August 8, 1609 Galileo Galilei presented a telescope, identical in design to a spyglass, to the Venetian Senate. Within a year he used it to discover lunar mountains, sunspots, Jupiter’s four largest moons and the Milky Way as a dense field of stars.

The day also marks several South‑African milestones: Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, the Dutch founded a supply station at the Cape in 1652, and the region became the British‑controlled Cape Colony in 1843.

In 1979 the Soviet Union launched its invasion of Afghanistan, a conflict that lasted a decade and ended with a Soviet withdrawal beginning on August 8, 1988.
