Gallstone prevalence rises among young adults due to dietary habits

Medical professionals are highlighting a rising trend of gallbladder issues, particularly among younger populations, driven by modern dietary habits. In one notable case in Chengdu, a 56-year-old woman had over 270 gallstones removed from her gallbladder during surgery at West China Hospital of Sichuan University.

Experts note that the prevalence of gallstones in patients under 35 has increased from 12% to 27% over the last five years. Contributing factors include high intake of fats, sugars, and refined carbohydrates, irregular meal patterns—such as skipping breakfast—and rapid weight loss. In Taiwan, doctors at Taoyuan Hospital warned that upper abdominal pain is often misdiagnosed as gastric issues, leading patients to self-medicate with stomach medicine when the actual cause is acute cholecystitis.

Clinical experts emphasize that while the number of stones is not the only indicator of risk, certain conditions require surgical intervention, including stones larger than 3cm, gallbladder wall thickening, or symptoms like fever and nausea. Neglecting gallstones can lead to severe complications, including acute pancreatitis and a significantly increased risk of gallbladder cancer, which has a poor prognosis.
