Gallup study reveals engagement gaps among Gen Z students

A study titled ‘2026 Voices of Gen Z’, conducted by Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation, highlights significant disparities in the educational experiences of K-12 students. The research indicates that students who feel engaged, supported, and connected to their schools are five times more likely to look forward to attending classes daily (75%) compared to those with lower engagement levels (14%).

Engagement also correlates strongly with personal wellbeing and future outlook. Approximately 73% of highly engaged students report they are currently thriving, and 81% feel prepared for the future. In contrast, only 31% of less engaged students report thriving, and just 27% feel prepared for what lies ahead.

The study identifies several challenges within the classroom environment. On average, students meet only eight of the 12 indicators used to measure academic engagement, support, and belonging. Notably, 41% of students reported learning nothing interesting in the previous week, and 49% stated that school does not allow them to perform tasks they excel at daily. Additionally, 30% of students noted a lack of adults in their school who recognize their talents or show interest in their wellbeing.
