Galo Osorio, suspect in UDLA manager murder, dies in custody

Galo Osorio, a primary suspect in the murder of UDLA financial manager Santiago Ávalos, died on August 29 at the IESS Hospital in Cotopaxi. Osorio was held in preventive detention at the Cotopaxi Social Rehabilitation Center following his arrest in July 2026.

The National Service for the Integral Attention of Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) confirmed the death and stated that a medico-legal autopsy will determine the official cause. While local reports suggest the presence of the synthetic drug phencyclidine (PCP) in his system, an anonymous source claimed the death may have resulted from an overdose.

Osorio, a former operations director, was allegedly part of a group of five individuals accused of orchestrating the June 11 assassination of Ávalos in Quito. Prosecutors believe the motive was to halt internal audits regarding university procurement and purchasing processes conducted by the victim.
