Galway men face additional sexual assault charges
Two men, aged 25 and 27, facing charges related to the alleged rape and false imprisonment of an 18-year-old woman in Galway, have been hit with additional sexual assault charges. The incident reportedly occurred on August 1 near Ceannt Station after the victim, who had become lost, approached the men for directions.
The 25-year-old man has been further charged with two counts of sexual assault. The 27-year-old man faces an additional count of sexual assault occurring at Victoria Place, near the station. Both men, who are asylum seekers believed to have arrived in Ireland approximately two years ago, appeared via video link in Galway District Court.
The accused have denied the rape allegations. During proceedings, it was noted that a recent High Court application for bail was refused. The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the cases proceed to trial on indictment in the Central Criminal Court. Due to reporting restrictions, the identities of the defendants remain protected.
