Gambia and Guinea-Bissau defense chiefs meet to boost security ties
The Chief of Defense Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Ousman Gomez, hosted General of the Army Tomas Djassi, head of Guinea-Bissau’s National Transition Council, in Banjul for official talks aimed at strengthening bilateral defense ties.
The discussions focused on enhancing regional security cooperation, improving mutual understanding, and addressing shared security priorities. Key areas for potential collaboration include professional military cooperation, personnel exchanges, joint training, and the sharing of operational expertise to raise training standards in both nations.
This visit occurs following the postponement of scheduled elections in Guinea-Bissau, which were intended to restore civilian rule. Analysts suggest the mission serves to bolster military ties and seek regional legitimacy through cooperation on cross-border crime, joint patrols, and security stability within the ECOWAS and African Union frameworks.
