Gambia and Guinea strengthen energy cooperation and regional ties

President Adama Barrow of The Gambia has concluded an official visit to Guinea, where he met with President Mamadi Doumbouya to strengthen bilateral ties, with a primary focus on energy cooperation.

Discussions centered on leveraging Guinea’s hydroelectric potential to address electricity supply challenges in The Gambia. The leaders emphasized the strategic importance of the Organisation pour la Mise en Valeur du Fleuve Gambie (OMVG), a regional organization involving Guinea, The Gambia, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau. The OMVG interconnection project aims to build a 1,600-kilometer electrical transport loop to enhance regional energy security and promote renewable energy.

Beyond energy, the two nations discussed cooperation in agriculture, trade, defense, security, tourism, fisheries, and education. A joint communiqué was signed to reaffirm their commitment to regional integration and economic development.
