Gambia Appoints US‑Based Lawyer Edi Faal as New Chief Justice

The Gambia has confirmed US‑based Gambian lawyer Edi M. O. Faal as the next Chief Justice, with a swearing‑in scheduled for Friday. He succeeds retiring Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow, who left office after reaching the constitutional age limit.

Faal brings more than four decades of experience in common‑law jurisdictions. He holds a JD from Western State University, an LLM in International Dispute Resolution from University College London, and is admitted to the bars of California, England and Wales, and the Supreme Court of The Gambia. His career includes high‑profile criminal defence work in the United States and representing The Gambia in investor‑state disputes before the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.

The appointment has prompted criticism from the Gambia Bar Association, which argues that Faal does not satisfy the constitutional eligibility criteria under Section 139(2) of the 1997 Constitution. The Bar Association maintains its objection concerns legal qualifications, not Faal’s character or competence, and has communicated its concerns to President Adama Barrow and other officials. Supporters contend his extensive legal practice meets the required standards.
