Gambia police official urges neutrality ahead of December election

Ebrima Ismaila Chongan, a retired Assistant Inspector General of the Gambia Police Force, has called on serving officers to maintain strict neutrality ahead of the December 5 presidential election. Chongan emphasized that the police must remain a republican institution loyal to the Constitution rather than any political party or individual.

He warned that any perceived bias could undermine public confidence in the democratic process. Chongan noted that election duties include protecting voter registration, securing campaign rallies for all political parties, and guarding Independent Electoral Commission officials and materials. This appeal comes as incumbent President Adama Barrow seeks a third term, alongside other candidates such as Ousainou Darboe and Talinb Ahmed Bensouda.
