Gambia political alliances shift ahead of December election
Political alliances in The Gambia are shifting rapidly ahead of the December 5th presidential election. The Gambia Movement for Progress (GMP), led by Professor Sidat Yaffa, has officially withdrawn from the opposition Coalition 2026 to join an alliance with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
Professor Yaffa stated the GMP's decision followed grievances regarding a lack of recognition within the opposition coalition. He cited instances of disrespect during rallies and concerns over the coalition's decision-making processes. While the GMP will cooperate with the NPP, Yaffa emphasized that the party will maintain its separate identity.
Simultaneously, the ruling NPP is experiencing its own political shifts. While absorbing figures like Essa Mbye Faal, the party has also seen the resignation of approximately 20 grassroots officials who reportedly left to join the newly registered National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Kebba Madi Bojang.
