Gambia River water levels rise sharply near Kédougou

Water levels in the Gambia River and its tributaries are experiencing significant fluctuations. In Kédougou, Senegal, the river is under close monitoring as it approaches the 7-meter alert threshold. Recent measurements showed the level at 6.47 meters, following a rapid 63-centimeter rise in a single day.

Other stations report dramatic increases. At Simenti, the water level rose by over one meter in 24 hours, reaching 8.79 meters. While this is a sharp increase, it remains 4.21 meters below the 13-meter alert level. Gouloumbou also saw a significant rise, reaching 6.49 meters, which is 5.51 meters below its 12-meter alert threshold.

In contrast, some areas are seeing a decrease in water levels. Diaguiri and Thiokoye have recorded declines, though levels in these locations remain significantly higher than those recorded during the same period in 2025. Hydrological services have advised populations living near the riverbanks to remain vigilant and monitor updates as continued rainfall could exacerbate flood risks.
