Gambia sanitation crisis sparks criticism of municipal authorities

Government ministers and political advocates have raised alarms over deteriorating sanitation conditions in the Greater Banjul Area. During a recent inspection of Serrekunda Market, the Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources, Rohey John Manjang, and the Minister of Gender, Women and Children Welfare, Fatou Kinteh, observed vendors working amidst accumulated waste and filth.

Traders expressed frustration with the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), alleging that despite paying regular fees and taxes, they are neglected by local authorities. Amadou Sanneh, an advocate for President Adama Barrow, also criticized the KMC and Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, stating that the waste poses a significant health hazard and that the council is failing its mandate to maintain clean communities.

Minister Manjang expressed devastation at the conditions observed and stated that the central government would engage with local councils to develop a practical plan to address these sanitation challenges.
