Gambling addiction risks highlighted through GamStop and GamCare reports

The UK-based self-exclusion program GamStop provides a mechanism for residents to restrict their access to all licensed online gambling platforms for periods ranging from six months to five years. Once registered, the system shares user data with participating operators, including major bookmakers and online casinos regulated by the UK Gambling Commission, to prevent spontaneous gambling activity. The program does not allow for early removal during the chosen exclusion period.

In a separate report, the charity GamCare has identified the gamification of everyday life as a contributing factor to gambling addiction. Analyzing helpline transcripts, GamCare noted that digital design elements such as points, badges, leaderboards, and chance-based rewards—often used in retail, finance, and video games via loot boxes—can make risk harder to recognize. GamCare CEO Victoria Corbishley emphasized that these emerging trends often remain underreported and require further study to support those affected by gambling harm.
