Gambling industry faces regulatory resistance and legal challenges

The gambling industry is facing scrutiny and legal challenges regarding regulation and market competition in Australia and the United States.

In Australia, researchers Charles Livingstone and Jenn Lacy-Nichols report that gambling corporations have utilized strategies similar to the tobacco industry to resist regulation. The industry generates over $10 billion annually in gambling tax revenue for state governments, which researchers suggest provides significant influence over policy. This financial contribution, combined with the integration of poker machines into social clubs and pubs, has helped embed gambling into Australian social life.

In the United States, BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt expressed expectations that the Supreme Court will rule against prediction markets. During a third-quarter earnings call, Greenblatt argued that these markets offer products that exceed the intent of Congressional authorization. While BetMGM reported a 7% increase in net revenue to $710 million, the company is monitoring legal uncertainties as stakeholders, including the NFL and the American Gaming Association, urge the high court to intervene.
