Game Freak may change Pokémon battle mechanics in future games

Game Freak has indicated that the Pokémon series may undergo significant changes to its traditional turn-based battle mechanics in future titles. In a recent behind-the-scenes interview, Pokémon Champions director Kazumasa Iwao and longtime battle director Shigeki Morimoto discussed the evolution of the franchise's combat systems.

Iwao explained that the development of Pokémon Champions was partly motivated by the desire to preserve the classic competitive rules that have been used since the series' inception. By providing a dedicated platform for the traditional battle experience, Game Freak aims to ensure that long-time fans are not left behind as the mainline games experiment with new combat styles.

This approach allows the developer more creative freedom to introduce new challenges and mechanics in future entries, such as the real-time combat experimentation seen in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, while maintaining a permanent home for the established turn-based system.
