Gamescom 2026 exhibitors targeted by series of hardware thefts
A series of thefts targeting exhibitors at Gamescom 2026 has sparked criticism of the event's security measures. Reports indicate that at least eight laptops and a Steam Deck were stolen, with criminals reportedly targeting hardware even from locked cabinets.
Independent developers have been particularly affected. Ryan Laley reported the loss of all his hardware, while Tessera Studios lost two laptops and a Steam Deck. The publisher iam8bit also reported two stolen laptops. Beyond the material value of the equipment, the thefts pose a significant risk to intellectual property, as the stolen devices contained unfinished game builds and confidential commercial data.
In a separate incident in Cologne, Spanish indie developer Jorge Gutierrez was reportedly robbed by six individuals. During the encounter, Gutierrez claimed an assailant attempted to stab him in the abdomen with a knife, though he managed to defend himself.
In response to the wave of thefts, Gamescom organizers stated that exhibitors are responsible for their own security and suggested they hire private guards or obtain theft insurance, noting that the terms of participation include such provisions.
