Gamescom 2026 showcases indie growth and Pearl Abyss technical insights

Gamescom 2026 in Cologne, Germany, is showcasing significant growth in the indie gaming sector. The Indie Area features 182 developers from 11 countries and 17 publishers, emphasizing creative direct engagement between developers and players. Notable national participations include Brazil’s first dedicated B2C Brazilian Indie Pavilion featuring 35 games, Spain’s Games From Spain delegation with 30 playable titles, and Japan’s JETRO pavilion supporting international expansion.

At the Gamescom Dev conference, Pearl Abyss presented technical insights into the development of its upcoming title, Crimson Desert. The company detailed its methods for constructing a vast open world using its proprietary BlackSpace Engine. The presentation focused on balancing rule-based automation for terrain and vegetation with manual design for landmarks and quests to ensure a seamless, playable environment that responds to weather and player interaction.
